A CHRISTMAS CAROL: TOUR
DECEMBER 6-21
Our Story
On location
When working on location, Bread & Roses creates live theatre productions for specific public spaces, drawing on site specific theatre practices, promenade, and immersive theatre methods in order to interrogate and disrupt the Shakespeare in the Park norms that do not serve the play, audience, or space. We prioritize creating work for public spaces that are outdoor, accessible, and underutilized as a performance venue for live theatre; we are always seeking to explore the ways in which the space and play might inform, illuminate and inspire the other, delighting our audience and deepening their engagement to the entire theatrical event.
oUR HISTORY
Before becoming Bread & Roses, this project and ensemble created work for 9 years under the name Off Road Shakespeare Company. During its tenure, Off Road produced two site specific immersive productions and toured four productions to transitional housing sites, emergency shelters, recovery spaces, community centers, and public libraries throughout King County and the surrounding region. Off Road built a partnership network of more than 20 local social service sites, developing long term partnerships and intentional volunteer engagement that continues to evolve today.
After almost 10 years of production under the name Off Road Shakespeare Company, Bread & Roses is building on our Off Road foundation with a commitment to creating excellent and accessible theatre, building significant and sustained community partnerships with our audiences, and striving to build greater stability and capacity in our project’s goals and dreams. We are stretching our reach with more performance partners in more locations than ever before, and are growing our impact by expanding our own offerings and coordinating with other local organizations who can provide volunteer services and meals for our performance partners.
oN TOUR
When building work to take on tour, Bread & Roses creates live theatre productions tailored to travel. We tour to venues that are not “typical” theatre spaces and perform for artistically underserved audiences; housing shelters, community centers, senior living facilities, and public libraries. Our plays on tour are performed inside a square or circle of chairs where our audience sits, with all the lights on, featuring simple, evocative scenic and costume elements, and live music played by the performers.
